Common questions about hypnosis
Q. Can anybody be hypnotized?
A. Anyone with has normal intelligence who is interested and willing to experience hypnosis can easily do so.
Q. What is self-hypnosis? How do I do it? Is it safe?
A. The easiest and best way is to learn from a qualified self-hypnosis instructor. That's important because if you have never experienced hypnosis, you will not feel hypnotized. There is really no such thing as a hypnotized feeling. The 'quality' of self-hypnosis is sometimes not as good as that induced by an 'operator' (a better word for 'hypnotist'), but hypnosis comes from within you - it has as much to do with you as it does the operator.
Once into the hypnotized state, a good way of working is to simply see yourself looking exactly the way you want to feel, or easily doing whatever it is you want to do. If you want to quit a habit, for instance, see yourself with evidence that you've quit the habit: e.g., if you want to stop biting your nails, create a VIVID image of you with elegantly manicured nails and allow yourself to feel truly elated. Suggestions must be phrased POSITIVELY - no 'not' or 'won't' or 'cannot' statements, etc.
Self-hypnosis is absolutely safe and you can exit the state whenever you want.
Q. Can people be made to forget things, like suggestions or the session itself?
A. You cannot actually 'make' anybody do anything in hypnosis. The hypnotist does not have power over the person who is hypnotized. Theoretically, you could suggest to a hypnotized person that they would forget the content of the session, but it is most unlikely that you could create a lasting and total amnesia, and certainly you would not forget the session itself.
Q. What is hypnosis anyway?
A. HYPNOSIS IS a safe, powerful technique that works directly with the deepest levels of the subconscious mind-the place where permanent change occurs. Hypnosis bypasses our conscious thoughts and accesses the real control center of our belief system-the subconscious. Hypnosis is a powerful tool that enables you to enhance your natural abilities and reach your goals. Rather than fighting with yourself to override inner thoughts and feelings, hypnosis allows you to create the desired subconscious response and break through the barriers that keep you from achieving your fullest potential. Change happens comfortably and almost immediately.
Q. What does it feel like to be hypnotized?
A. Actually, it doesn't. For the vast majority of people there is actually no such thing as a 'hypnotized feeling' - the vast majority of people would insist afterwards that they had not been hypnotized. Since everyone has experienced light levels of hypnosis at different times, don't be surprised if you don't feel hypnotized. All that is required to be hypnotized is a motivation to be hypnotized, concentration, imagination, relaxation, and the willingness to respond to suggestion.
Q. How can you tell that somebody is hypnotized?
A. There are several external signs, though few people show all of them. Some of the most noticeable are: A facial flush, total relaxation, rapid eye movement, eyelid flicker, enhanced salivation (causing frequent swallowing), slowed respiration, relaxed lower jaw.
Q. Can you make anybody do things they don't want to?
A. In my opinion, no. People will sometimes do things they would not normally do, though this does not mean it is something they do not want to do.
Q. Can it be used to control people?
A. NO! If you approach hypnosis with an open mind and a belief that it will help you, you will demonstrate to yourself that you are not giving up control; in fact, you are not giving anything up. On the contrary, you are gaining a lot.
Q. Can you get 'stuck' in hypnosis?
A. No, you definitely cannot! If you were hypnotized and the hypnotist just walked away and left you, you would simply bring yourself out of the state whenever you wanted to.
Q. Is it dangerous in any way?
A. In the hands of a properly trained individual, hypnosis is perfectly safe. There is only one way in which hypnosis could be dangerous. Hypnosis works so well for controlling acute and chronic pain that an individual who is proficient in using self-hypnosis could block pain and thus not have the pain as a signaling devise that something is wrong. Without this signal we could fail to seek necessary medical attention.
The safest way to avoid complications is not to use hypnosis as a means of pain control without a physician's recommendation.
Q. How does hypnotherapy differ from stage hypnosis?
A. Stage hypnosis is for education and entertainment only. I regularly visit high school psychology classes to demonstrate the awesome power of the mind in a fun and thought-provoking way. Hypnotherapy is more complex. It looks for core issues of problems, solutions, and answers within your own mind.
Q. What's the difference between hypnotherapy and psychotherapy?
A. Usually, psychotherapy makes changes to the subconscious by using the understanding and imagery of the conscious mind. Hypnotherapy attempts to bypass the conscious mind to a large extent, working directly with the subconscious. For this reason, hypnotherapy is often quicker than psychotherapy. With hypnotherapy, your subconscious creates new and more powerful ways to solve problems, overcome fears and limitations, and make lasting changes in your life!
Q. Is Regression safe?
Regression to childhood events is, in my opinion, one of the most effective methods of hypnotherapy. Ask your subconscious to take you to the cause of the problem and it will take you into a memory or event that created a conflict, negative decision or a negative belief about yourself. These decisions and beliefs determine our behavior and reactions to our present circumstances. When we find and release the cause, the new attitude or decision can take place, and you are finally free to change your mind
Q. Is it successful with real phobias?
A. Yes! If you have a fear, don't carry that burden around any longer. Get rid of it as soon as you can possibly make an appointment.
Q. How can Hypnosis make me wealthy?
A. It's almost certain that you have hidden negative beliefs about wealth and even more certain that you do NOT know what is really holding you back, and what your real fears are about success. If you knew consciously what they are, you would be able to release and resolve them. The fact that they are hidden, in the form of emotions and fears, often means they don't have a way to be accessed or understood. Hypnosis is the fastest way to find out what you are really doing to limit your success.
Q. Does it always work?
A. No, no more than any other form of medicine, complimentary OR orthodox does.
Q. How long does it take to produce a result?
A. It can be as few as one session with immediate results for a simple problem. More complex issues may take longer. Discuss this with me during your free consultation.
Q. Can somebody's mind be too strong?
A. No. The stronger the mind the better the ability to focus and concentrate, which makes the hypnotized state easier to achieve.
Q. Can you hypnotize someone without them knowing it?
A. You can, if you have the skills to do so. The use of 'hypnotic language patterns' and pacing and leading body language will do it. But you still could not get that person to do anything with hypnosis that they would not do without it. Hypnosis merely overcomes inhibition and the 'conscious critical faculty' - the part of our thought processes that tends to limit our behavior or belief system.
Q. Sometimes I don't think I really want to change? Can hypnosis help?
A. Being truthful with yourself is very important. Hypnosis can help you only if you really want it to help you. If you have little or no desire to change, make a list of why you should change. Build a vision of the future you want. Like building a house, you start by creating a blueprint of the finished house; only then can you begin building. You don't just decide to build a house, run to Home Depot, buy whatever materials are on hand and start building. Unfortunately, that's how most people build their lives. Imagine a future three years from now, where you have achieved the success you want and everything in your life is working the way you want it to be. Visualize all the domains of your life: physical, emotional, financial, career, relationship, social and spiritual. Take the time to write down what you really want for yourself. Then, working back from that future, fill in the steps to get there. Consider what elements would need to be done in a year to be where you want in three years. Then look at what you need to be doing in six months, one month and one week. Then tomorrow. And today; you start doing today what you can. You can't go from couch potato to Black Belt in a day, but if that's what you want, you can start today by attending class three times a week, and build a program in increments. Soon you may be ready to give up your habits or undesirable behavior. Motivation is the single most important element in a successful hypnosis experience.
Q. Can hypnosis help me lose weight?
A. According to the nonprofit Center for the Advancement of Health in Washington, evidence is abundant that hypnotism works to relieve pain and anxiety. But can a heavy person be hypnotized into being skinny?
David Patterson, who's spent many years researching hypnotism with grants from the National Institutes of Health, warns that hypnosis cannot be effective as a sole treatment, but rather in combination with a comprehensive weight loss program that teaches proper eating habits and exercise. In this context, he says hypnosis can be "extremely effective."
"Losing weight and keeping it off almost always involves changes in lifestyle," says Patterson, a professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle.
A person has to want to change, and once he or she has made that decision, has to do the exercise and eat the right foods. The role of the hypnotist is to urge the patient to adopt healthful behavior, through the power of suggestion -- the implantation of an idea into a patient's subconscious mind, in hope that it will affect waking behavior after the session. A suggestion may be an exercise scenario, in which the patient, under trance, is asked to visualize himself or herself exercising and feeling good about it.
Hypnosis can simply help you “change your mind” about eating and exercising. To make life-long changes, you must have a desire to learn healthy behavior. Even hypnosis isn't strong enough to make a person do something against his or her will. The number one reason people don't lose weight under a hypnosis program is resistance to change.
Q. Can hypnosis be used to improve children's schoolwork or test taking?
A. Yes. Children make some of the best clients because of their ability to imagine. Most of them also have a great capacity to picture things in their minds. The main thing to teach them is to "see yourself as (successful, concentrating, remembering, calm, relaxed, tension-free, etc.)" Self-hypnosis is an excellent study tool for children. Teach your children how to use this skill. It is a gift that they will use for a lifetime.
