What Is Pilates?
Pilates, developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates, is a method of exercise and movement designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body using concentration, control, breath, flow, precision, alignment, and core stability. It strengthens and tones muscles (especially the core muscles), improves posture, provides flexibility and balance, unites body and mind, and creates a long and lean shape. All Pilates movement originates from the center, or the core. It is a systematic practice utilizing specific exercises and focused breathing techniques to achieve a uniform body and a balanced mind. Pilates helps re-align the spine and back into its natural, neutral shape. Pilates has been used by dancers, actors, gymnasts, and athletes for years to achieve a long, lean, sculpted body without adding bulk. It is now entering the mainstream.
The method, originally termed “Contrology,” evolved from Joseph Pilates' many years of self-study and study in yoga, Eastern and Western Philosophies, Zen, physical and mental conditioning, and ancient Greek and Roman regimens. His life-long work—based on these many different teachings—creates a fusion of mind, body, and spirit.
Jamie's Beginning Pilates is based on Joseph Pilates' classic sequence of controlled movement. For beginners, the classic 34-move sequence is pared down to a 20-move sequence, with beginner modifications. Many of the intermediate and advanced movements will be introduced in a future Level II class.
In Pilates, each exercise is performed with complete focus and concentration on every part of the body, which improves body awareness and exercise effectiveness; thereby uniting the mind with the body. Pilates emphasizes control and attention to detail. Precision movement helps avoid injury and achieve the greatest results.
Using the breath helps cleanse toxins from the body, oxygenate the blood, revitalize the body and spirit, lift mood, and improve muscle and brain function. Breath work also helps muscles relax and stretch to create long, lean muscles.
Proper alignment reduces stress on the muscles and joints and properly strengthens and stretches the targeted muscle groups. In Pilates, all energy originates from the core (abdominals, lower back, hips, and buttocks) and flows outward to the extremities. A strong core helps the entire body move more effectively and efficiently and gives the body proper support for movement. Our bodies are designed to move with a natural fluidity; therefore Pilates does not use quick, uneven, or isolated movement.
Pilates emphasizes quality over quantity: one precise movement is superior to many sloppy movements. Pilates movement is excellent for stress reduction as the concentration and focus required takes us away from our busy lives during class. In movement, we concentrate on precision and alignment and focus on the breath to engage the core and to aid in fluid movement, flowing from one position to the next with unity of mind, body, and spirit.
Pilates is rooted in the belief that physical fitness contributes to happiness and balance of the mind.
