What is a Punch Card?
Our yoga classes are punch-card classes; that is, you may buy a card containing 12 classes or unlimited monthly attendance. Simply present it to the reception desk attendant before class to receive your punch. With punch cards, you pay only for those classes you attend and may participate when you want, as often as you want.
Do I Need a Sticky Mat?
A yoga mat, or sticky mat, is required for yoga practice to prevent the feet and hands from sliding during pose flows and postures. You may purchase a mat at many local stores; alternatively, we have high-quality sticky mats that you may use during your trial class.
What Should I Wear to Class?
Any type of clothing that is comfortable and does not restrict movement is appropriate for yoga practice. Yoga is practiced with bare feet.
Is the Instructor Certified to Teach?
Yes. The Instructor, Jamie Thornton White, is a Certified Yoga Instructor through the National Endurance Sports Trainers Association (NESTA) and a Certified Personal Trainer/Fitness Counselor and Group Exercise Instructor through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA).
Sharon is a certified Yoga Instructor under the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and also teaches Yoga at St. Charles Community College.
What Form of Yoga Do You Teach?
Our yoga class is a unique blend of Hatha Yoga poses and tradition, traditional sports stretching, breathing, and relaxation techniques. It is different from traditional yoga because it is easier for beginners to perform and is a wonderful compliment to a wide variety of sports training. It is less rigid in structure than Ashtanga (power yoga) and allows for more variation in movement. It includes some Pilates-style mat exercises, but with a greater focus on flexibility. Some of the lunging pose series are excellent for sports conditioning, with much more structure than traditional sports flexibility training.
How Will Yoga Benefit Me?
Clients from all fitness and skill levels will benefit from the added strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, endurance, stamina, breath control, focus, stress reduction, confidence, and general well-being that yoga practice provides. You will easily recognize and appreciate improved fitness, lessened injury risk, and quickened recovery time. You will further benefit from the resulting harmony of mind, body, and spirit and increased confidence that comes from yoga practice.
Yoga practice helps the student disconnect from internal and external pressures and reconnect with the inner self and the outer body. In other words, YOGA = "ME TIME." An understanding and practice of proper breathing techniques will help the student relax and progress into challenging movement with greater ease. The postures in yoga allow the body to return to a neutral, natural alignment, balancing and strengthening both sides of the body and quieting the mind. Yoga is non-competitive and does not focus on an end result. Yoga allows the student to relax into a posture rather than force the body to comply. It creates a balance between stretching and relaxing, strengthening and yielding, and the inner self and outer body. The yoga student will learn to connect with, appreciate, and understand his or her body—its many structures, muscle formations, and subtle energies—and his or her mind. By being aware of the body and its functions and recognizing the purpose of movement, the student will be able to improve through increased awareness and an understanding of movement.
The mental benefits of yoga include focus, mental control, stress management, mental clarity, confidence, and greater self-understanding. Improved focus will allow the student to concentrate on movement, training, and steady improvement. Increased inner calm and harmony will allow the student to approach sport with less focus on result and perceived limitations, yet with more self-confidence in his or her personal ability. By learning to be and move in the moment, each movement will be important, yielding improved performance. By releasing stress, tension, and worry, the student will be better able to focus his or her energy on training in other areas and break through invisible barriers that may have kept him or her from improvement.
I've Never Taken a Yoga Class. Is it Suited for Beginners?
Our Level 1 Class is designed for the beginning student. We also offer a mixed-level class (Level 1 & 2), which is designed for both beginners and repeat students. All postures are broken down, move by move, breath by breath, and are practiced very slowly and gently, with control. As you begin to master simple postures and pose flows, you may begin to add advanced applications. Both beginner and advanced applications will be taught in a mixed-level class.
I've Taken Yoga in the Past. Will We Learn Advanced Techniques?
The Level 2 Class is designed for intermediate students. In our mixed-level (Level 1 & 2) class, all skill and fitness levels will be accommodated. Advanced postures and pose flows will be taught in class as a variation of basic movement. For example, beginners may complete a standing forward fold while intermediate students may practice a standing forward fold with a hand clasp. Another example: beginners may rest in the child's pose while advanced students practice the plow and the shoulder stand.
How Does Yoga Compliment Tae Kwon Do Training?
Tae Kwon Do students will benefit from Yoga practice in the following ways:
Increased flexibility: improved flexibility in the legs and hips will help the student achieve the high kicks and low lunges necessary in forms and basics.
Strength: improved strength in the core and upper body will yield more powerful technique and will build the muscles necessary for increased power in jumping, striking, and kicking.
Balance: improved balance is essential for good execution of kicks and strikes, for excellent sparring practice and competition, and for maintaining low stances.
Mental focus: improved focus and concentration is necessary for executing focused and powerful techniques, performing board breaks, and implementing sparring strategy.
Endurance: improved endurance will help the student complete difficult training sessions, such as multiple forms and basics and intense sparring.
Core strength and stability: improved core strength and stability is essential for powerful execution of strikes and kicks; maintaining low, strong stances; and keeping the abdominal muscles tight.
Breath control: improved breath control is necessary during intense forms training and sparring.
Mind-body-spirit discipline: discipline in the mind-body-spirit is the core of martial arts training; martial artists must train both the spirit and the body to excel; yoga and martial arts both incorporate this training in practice.
Meditation: both yoga and the martial arts focus on meditation and moving meditation to improve focus and harmony; as students improve their meditation skills, their focus will also improve.
Body awareness: both yoga and the martial arts emphasize an awareness of the physical body and the space around the body; yoga practice will assist in the student's ability to feel and to use chi (energy) in their training.
Are Personal Training Sessions Available?
Our Yoga program is an excellent personal training tool. The student will benefit from the one-on-one instruction, personal adjustments, and gentle coaching; thereby experiencing rapid progress. When schedules allow, single, 1-hour sessions are available, by appointment, for $20.
What are "By Appointment Only" Classes?
Sorry, no "By Appointment Only" classes will be held this month, with the exception of private group classes of 6 or more.
From time to time, a special evening class will be held by appointment only, which means many different things. If you are a punch-card holder and would like to take the special evening class, you must call ahead and make a reservation. If you are joining other card holders with reservations, the fee is simply one punch. Non-card holders may also make a reservation for $10. If you request a private, one-on-one class, the fee will be $20. Reserve a private class for your group for $10 per person with a minimum of 6 participants (not to exceed 20). Groups should provide their own mats.
Specialized classes for those with special needs are also available for this time slot, including Chair Yoga, Senior Yoga, Kids Yoga, Prenatal Yoga, and Yoga for Relaxation and Meditation. Our Studio is wheelchair accessible.
